Princess Masako: Prisoner of the Chrysanthemum Throne
Apr 21, 2008
This book is a must-read if you're at all interested in the Japanese Royal family. The book talks not only of Princess Masako but also of Prince Naruhito, and how they struggle almost nonstop against the Imperial Household Agency which controls their every move from behind closed doors. Yet, while fascinating, at times the book has a "tabloid" feel to it, which I found to be jarring and incongruous with the subject matter. Quite a bit of the book is speculation, though, as secretive as the Imperial Household is, one comes away with much more having read the book than depending on the Japanese news media alone.
