it was amazing

Irrespective of your political persuasion this is a book worth reading. Jones makes a convincing and well-evidenced case that the political agenda has been hi-jacked, primarily through media channels owned by organisations and individuals who have an interest in promoting the idea that 'There Is No Alternative' to deregulation and non-intervention in the economy. This is in spite of the fact that this mantra, adopted by both Left and Right on both sides of the Atlantic, has led, more or less directly, to the 2008 financial crisis, the effects of which the economy and the bulk of the population are still suffering (while the perpetrators got away more or less unscathed owing to the political protection they have acquired).
Written before the disastrous Brexit vote, the idea promoted by the titular Establishment is that any deviation towards what passes for normal centrist politics in the rest of Europe will lead to dire economic consequences (whereas it is only likely to lead to higher taxes and less profit for a tiny minority).
Following Brexit, which was largely (in my humble opinion) the result of popular discontent with the situation described above that had no effective channel other than to blame Europe and immigration, leading to the aberration that is UKIP, it is almost satisfying (but not really) to observe that the threatened consequences of deviating from the neo-liberal consensus are now about to hit us anyway. Unfortunately, the individuals most responsible are likely to get away with it (again) by moving to Frankfurt with the rest of the financial sector. One is almost tempted to say good-riddance and vote Labour. Almost.
