This book is a masterpiece. Pete Walker excels at describing his own experience with CPTSD and he conveys it in a format that can be understood by all. The information in this book will help you heal, read it slowly because it's highly triggering, but it's worthy. Your well being is worth. You matter.
CPTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) develops as a result of being raised in a abusive/neglectful environment, in which the primary caregivers (parents, grandparents, step-parents, other relatives, etc) don't met the children's needs causing profound emotional wounds that follow them into adulthood. The main difference between PTSD and CPTSD, is that in the last scenario the traumatic events occur through a long period of time, is consistent and devastating. In this way, the child grows up with a false sense of reality, without healthy relationship standards and struggles with self-esteem and basic human connections.
This book is a must read for those who:
* Feel/felt alone, misunderstood, isolated, neglected, ignored, shamed, blamed, hated, unwanted, weird, depressed, constantly tired, anxious, angry, used.
* Somehow know/knew in their core that something was not right with their family of origin.
* Their family of origin always tell/told them that they were the problem, they were crazy/insane.
* Keep engaging into toxic relationships / if they're attracted to someone, that person turns out to be their worst enemy (apply to family, friends, romantic partners, professional relationships)
Overall content (includes more topics):
- Causes and symptoms of CPTSD, including somatic issues
- Explanation of bad parenting models and children's coping mechanism
- Cognitive and emotional healing (reclaim your mind and own your emotions)
- Reparenting the self (becoming your best caregiver)
- Recovery (managing and reducing emotional flashbacks)
- How to find a good therapist and support group
- Toolboxes and guides for self improvement
- Bibliography of awesome books and additional resources to aid you in your journey
"What was not provided by your parents can now be provided by yourself and others."
