Cherokee Removal. Civil War.
Written from the perspective of Will Cooper, who, at the age of twelve, is given a map, a key to a general store, and a horse and sent alone into Indian Territory. As an adult, he becomes a white chief of the Cherokee, after his adopted Indian father dies. He manages to buy up a vast tract of land, so that a few hundred Cherokee avoid the disasterous removal from N. Carolina to Oklahoma. This is a biographical novel of a fictional character.
