To me, this book felt like an attempt to deal with writer's block by getting into the background instead of moving the story along. It's like he didn't know where to go after the riddling contest, took six years to wait for something to come to him, and nothing did, so he just went with what did come. Parts of it were really good, other parts I was like, "Come onnnnnnn!! Get back to the storrrrryyyyyyy!!"

What really killed this book for me was the last 100 pages or so. I felt like he still didn't know where he wanted the book to go, so he spent the weekend watching movies on TCM, came up with this 'homage' and called it a day.
