At times difficult for me to read, this book nevertheless comes the closest of any I have read in describing all encompassing grief, and the mind games one must play to gain any comfort. The story is told by various voices, including Donald, a Finnish- Chippewa man dying of ALS. We also hear from his wife, his brother in law and his friend, as they all struggle to deal with his dying and death. I have always considered Harrison a minimalist writer, yet without waxing lyrical, his words resonate with beauty and dignity. I plan to recommend this to my grief support group, in the hope that despite the sorrow, they can glean some peace from this story, as I did.
