firesandwords This is, as far as I know the only book out that describes in immense detail the 1983 wells-fargo bank expropriation and it's place in the 120-year struggle for a free and independent Puerto Rico. The book starts with tremendous detail and research by a local sociologist and writer about the bank robbery, the fbi and state investigations and delves into the long history of anti-colonial resistance in Puerto Rico. It mostly treats the Macheteros, a revolutionary socialist Puerto Rican Nationalist clandestine organization, with a fair take on their history and actions. The author was able to meet with local Macheteros and Nationalists in Hartford as well as Puerto Rico.
This book is highly recommended both as an introduction to to the Colonization of Puerto Rico and to Puerto Rican diaspora in the US. It is a good entry point for understanding independence struggles, the Macheteros, and the bank robbery trials. Those well-read in the history will also appreciate the details of the case and the context given to it.
