really liked it
bookshelves: fiction

It's impossible not to compare The Marriage Plot with Middlesex and The Virgin Suicides and yet the book couldn't be more different. In fact, it's hard to believe all three of them could have possibly been written by the same writer. The only commonality between them is their readability and honesty.

The Marriage Plot is not a great novel in the sense that Middlesex is or groundbreaking and edgy in the way that The Virgin Suicides is. Rather, it is a lovely piece of fiction that is pleasurable, if a little guilty, and more about the characters than it is about its form (as any good marriage plot should be).

When I got toward the end, I couldn't imagine how he could possibly wrap it up in the time he had left. Then, I got to the last page, which I found to be one of the most satisfying pages that I've ever read.
