it was amazing
bookshelves: put-down, german, short-stories
Read in September, 2011

Put this down three years ago with only three stories left, for no clear reason that I can remember. Finally picked it back up, finished the three stories, and felt compelled to read it over again, which might take another three years. There's not much to say about the stories that hasn't been said already, but especially interesting in this collection are the end notes, with quotes from Kafka's diaries about the process of writing the stories. It's so funny to read these masterfully crafted stories and then read Kafka say about one (Blumfeld, an Elderly Bachelor), for instance, "It is ugly and gives me a headache. In spite of all its truth it is wicked, pedantic, mechanical, a fish barely breathing on a sandbank." And the fact that a lot of these stories are unfinished gives an added insight into the creative process of a truly brilliant writer. One of the real treasures on my bookshelf.
