The only reason I finished this book was because I hosted my book club and led the discussion. There might have been an interesting story, but it was buried underneath 300+ pages of superfluous events and information. Verghese spoon fed me every detail, every inference and every conclusion. It took all the joy out of reading, because there was no need to reflect; all I had to do was read the next paragraph to learn what the author wanted me to think. The "amazing events" felt contrived, and to add insult to injury, there were a number of glaring grammatical errors.
