** spoiler alert ** Summary: When the three younger Penderwick sisters (Skye, Jane, and Batty) go to Maine with Aunt Claire and are separated from oldest sister Rosalind for the first time in their lives, an uncertain Skye is left in charge as the OAP--oldest available Penderwick.

3rd book in the series

Dad and Iantha go to England for their honeymoon, Rosalind goes away on vacation with her friend to NJ, and the other three girls and Jeffrey (friend from 1st book) go on vacation to Maine with Aunt Claire.

Their small vacation home is right along the water and they meet a friendly neighbor Alec. Alec is a musician and has a piano. He and Jeffrey hit it off right away as Jeffrey wants nothing more in the world than to be a musician. Aunt Claire breaks her ankle and Skye is determined to keeps things going and not have to go home. She is the OAP and is so scared about keeping Batty safe. She can't do a great job like Rosalind. But Rosalind needs a much deserved break as she has been taking on Mom responsibilities for much too long. Meanwhile, Skye's written instructions for taking care of Batty become damaged. She can't make out the words but sees "blow up." So now she is scared of doing something that will make Batty blow up! (Turns out in the end, it was instructions to blow up a plastic toy that Iantha had given to Batty for the trip) Jane is working on her new Sabrina Star book and decides it should be about love. Jane falls for a boy while on vacation, Dominic. He doesn't pay but attention to her but does kiss her one day and then continues to ignore her. She writes him an ode that he sends back with a mean message on it. Turns out it was a bet to kiss her. Jane is heartbroken and ends up cutting off most of her hair for the camp Firegod making more wishes. Page 178 "Fire, Sun, Sand, and Sea Listen now and hear my plea. Humbly do I ask of thee, PLease bring what I wish to me."

In the end we find out that Alec is actually Jeffrey's father. He was the man who met Mrs. Tifton while in college, they feel in love, married but broke up due to her father's wishes. She found out she was pregnant and never told Alec. He never knew he had a child. Alec races to talk with Mrs. Tifton and find out that it is true. Skye meanwhile has to keep this all a secret with Aunt Claire until Alec talks to Jeffrey. He does and Jeffrey runs away and it takes a while before they smooth things over enough to talk to each other about it.
