it was amazing

NO SPOILERS!! One word...sprawling. This book took you, literally, all over the world. I really liked the "Incident At _________" parts of the story - really brought home the worldwide impact of what was happening in the story. The scope and scale of the book was grand - the underground parts of the story were truly epic in a biblical sense. There were 3-4 different surprises in the book that when introduced (I NEVER EXPECTED THESE CHANGES), really changed the direction of the book for me - ALL IN A GOOD WAY. I read the book in less than 2 days - it was impossible to put down because of the aforementioned changes and I needed to know which direction Mr. Long was headed and how this was going to end. The premise of the story...perhaps a bit far-fetched for me but the inter-weaving of the cultural connections between above and below ground peoples was very, very believable and in my opinion, plausible. As for the characters - they were all extremely well written and unbelievably real and easy to cheer for. The violence in the book was not overdone - it was sophisticated but very honest - the smells, sounds and the physicality of it all made me feel like I was watching it in person - I winced more than a few times because the depravity of the violence was totally appropriate for the environment, culture and people involved and wasn't in any way embellished. Mr. Long does an excellent job at describing everything - bad guys, good guys, bodily descriptions, food, transportation, lighting, physical surroundings (above, below), sex, odors - I felt like I was right there. The grand journey that was at the center of the story was extremely well written and I felt like I was 100% "down there" with them. BOTTOM LINE: I could go on and on but suffice it to say...I loved this book!!

Karen have you seen the movie? I couldn't watch a scary movie for a very long time after that! My oldest son still teases me about it!

Edward H. Busse, III Yes - the movie is not based on this book - same title…totally different storyline. We rented it one night and Shelly got up after the first 10 minutes and left because the claustrophobia of the first tunnel scene was too much for her. I loved it - it was a really good and scary movie!!
