The story of Thomas the Rhymer's early days in Middle-Earth, his seven-year visit to Elfland and subsequently how do the mundane folk cope with someone who's been fairy-touched?

It's lyrical, beautiful and quite evocative and I think it deserves the accolades and awards it's garnered. And yet maybe that's the novel's inherent flaw, at times it feels like its main purpose is to create "beautiful prose" and the author overdraws the ballad into unnecessary territories in the process. An overextended fairy tale of sorts, for poets and the romantically inclined, restless warriors not welcome.

I liked it but I was also glad to reach the final page.
