An interesting premise this story rests upon.

The first chapter really baffled me when I first read it - I really did not know what to expect out of the book, except that it was quirky enough I believed I would not like it. Especially the manner in which the words of the Bible were twisted just enough so as to give the exact opposite meaning - God giving all the choice to man, as versus Jesus acknowledging God's power over man, and that sort of thing - the entire chapter is filled with it.

Still, once I got started into Richard's main narrative, I could enjoy the book for the creativity the story offers. For it is creative, no matter how obnoxious it is to be turning around enormous figures such as Jesus (though were there any implications to past messiahs other than Jesus? I don't know that there really were any other specific ones, interestingly enough - correct me if I am wrong). And some points of creativity just have to be appreciated. I like the concept of the illusions for the most part - as the book continues, it becomes less exciting - but I just could not help but smile when Richard broadcasted the music in his mind aloud. If I were one of Bach's messiahs, I DEFINITELY would have that problem... definitelydefinitelydefinitely...

Anyway. I don't know how I would go about recommending this book. It's short, so it doesn't hurt to sit down and read it in one afternoon or something. In that sense, I might tell someone, "Well, it's interesting, and it's not a WASTE of time." But was it incredible? Was it enlightening? Maybe it's just my bias that we shouldn't live a self-centered life (even if life were all illusions, which we cannot prove either way), but I didn't find this book either incredible or enlightening. Just an interesting take on things.
