Although many disliked this Irving novel, I found it to be a wonderful story about the redemptive power of love. In this novel, television reporter Patrick Wallingford loses his hand, on film, to a caged lion while in India covering a circus. A women and Green Bay Packers fan, Doris, convinces her husband to donate his hand, and he later kills himself. Doris also insists on visiting Patrick beforehand and visitation rights to the hand the procedure.
