Lisa Ko does an admirable job of depicting a family ripped apart when an immigrant parent is deported with a child left behind.
Set in New York and China, The Leavers is a powerful and moving analysis of borders and belonging. It's the story of how one boy comes into his own when everything he's loved has been taken away and how a mother learns to live with the mistakes of her past.
From the title it's evident this book is about leaving. The many themes in this story, immigration, profound sadness and loss, family, hope and new beginnings make this a story you won't soon forget.
