I was going to give this book 2 stars, but it really started to pick up about 3/4 of the way through when the love story finally came into play, so I upped it to 3. Shreve says in the interview at the end of the book that it is a love story that uses WWII as a canvas. I have to disagree - I thought that at least half of the book, if not more, was centered around WWII events. This is not a bad thing necessarily, but for a book that is portrayed as a love story, it was not what I was expecting. I feel like it took a long time to get to the romance and get the plot set up to a point at which it would be logical/believable for a romance to blossom between the refugee pilot and his keeper, Claire. Those portions of the novel were quite interesting - and the history was as well. I really did like the way the ending was revealed, in a flash-forward, and how everything turned out. I appreciated how realistic the resolution was.
