really liked it
bookshelves: historical-fiction, series

A good conclusion to an interesting series. I knew parts of what were coming but I didn't remember everything so it was still a surprising ending. Very sad in places but I guess Bonaparte handled the issue of "royal infertility" much better than Henry VIII. Josephine continued to be a compelling character and her occasional memories of childhood on Martinique were an interesting contrast to her opulent lifestyle. I still don't understand how France ended up with an Emperor who needed an heir after the Revolution. Was it just cult of personality or did people really think that without Napoleon everything they had achieved would fall apart?
