I loved the promise inherent in this book. Fourteen writers base stories around the beautiful prints and captions from Allsburg's The Mystery of Harris Burdick. Problem is: I like Allsburg's book and the imaginative exercise it sparks in readers *more* than I liked the professional writers' takes on the pictures, several of which simply fell short for me. Oh well. I guess I prefer to make up my own stories. More importantly, I love the simple promise that we can all imagine our own stories as well as any professional. Read this only after you've fully exhausted your imagination on The Mystery (and maybe not even then).
