really liked it
bookshelves: guilty-pleasures

It took me a long time to get around to reading this, and I almost had to put it down when I got to the graphic descriptions of the foot-binding process (but vulgar curiosity kept me reading). It turned out to be a beautiful, if at times painful, story of a lifelong friendship between two women living in 19th century China. There is a huge cultural divide Lisa See had to bridge in order to make the actions and motivations of her characters apparent to a 20th century Western reader. At times the effect is a bit didactic, but I was hooked all the same. My world feels a little larger after reading this book.
