I heard these guys on NPR and thought doing a research book about what people like in the bedroom using Internet porn searches as data was pretty brilliant. The book was a little disappointing, but there were some real nuggets around the differences between men, women, gay men and gay women in terms of desire. The central theme is around how men are like Elmer Fudd and women are like Miss Marple is pretty classic. Basically, when it comes to sex, men are like Elmer Fudd in that they grab their rifle and shoot at anything that even remotely looks like a wabbit. Women, on the other hand, need data before they hook up or are even turned on (data like the potential partner's job, long-term income earning potential, whether or not they'd make a good parent, etc.). This is why men love Internet porn (lots of random shots of sex delivered at a frantic pace) and women prefer romantic stories and/or sexy stories (lots of interaction and discussion and build up prior to any sex). Generally pretty on target!

I also found the research around what gay men like in terms of porn and sex in general. Ironically, gay men and straight men want the same thing -- lots of big penises! Yes, research shows that straight men prefer big dicks in their porn and even require lots of cock shots (just like gay men). There was also a lot of interesting data on what they refer to as "squicky" sex (fetishes, group sex, etc.) and the surprising facts are around how many men and women enjoy this stuff. Apparently a majority of us like it a little kinky!
