it was amazing
bookshelves: currently-reading

Not quite through, but so far it's been a wonderful experience. Shalamov has a great talent of painting multiple pictures of the horrors and trials Soviet prisoners had to endure in forced-labour camps throughout north-eastern Siberia. "In these [short] stories, he vividly captures the lives of ordinary people caught up in terrible circumstances, their hopes and plans extending no further than a few hours."

It's a classic piece of literature that I believe is vital to a well-rounded understanding of others' sufferings around the world in the present and past.
