A fabulous new series with a twisting and uncomfortable plot cross-crossing Edinburgh society and slums via a woman medical student, a woman doctor, a brothel keeper, and professors teaching the first- and mostly unwelcome, class of female medical students to at the university of Edinburgh. A little too scripted in a few sections, the book is nonetheless taut, engaging, and clear-eyed about the unfair and often vile treatment of women.
