really liked it
bookshelves: nonfiction

At times, Jake's honesty shocked me. He does not hold back. You may finish the book thinking he is a jerk.

His story is compelling and painful to read. I think I winced and laughed in equal measure.

The story lags a little bit in the middle once his career as a reporter in Japan gets underway, but the book is worth reading. His experience and knowledge of Japan seems to be unique, genuine and hard-earned. He's no poser.

If you're interested in Japan, the yakuza, women's issues, cross cultural experiences or beat reporting, there is a lot to chew on here.
