the date that i read this is, ironically, significant in the story, so i was hoping that it would pack a wallop. instead, well, is "good enough" good enough? if so, then this book is ... a good enough read. quick. inoffensive. insubstantial. given its weighty subject matters -- autism, cancer, the cattle-killing farm subsidies of the depression, the abuse of power in a small town, lynchings, and bigotry -- you'd think the book would have had more heft to it, but it's satisfied to simply ... evaporate slowly and without much notice, like the condensation on a glass of iced tea.

too bad. it was almost a good book.
