The Handmaid’s Tale (The Handmaid's Tale, #1)

This was a little hard to get into at first. The narrative is a slow-burner for me, becoming more intense as Offred (the main character) seems to awaken to the reality she now inhabits. As far as post-apocalyptic fiction goes, though, this is something I couldn't have read at a better time.
A series of events has seen women subjugated and slotted into roles- basically, wives, breeders or renegades. Offred is in the reviled yet revered position of a woman destined to have babies to repopulate a decimated society. As the story progresses, we learn a little of what lead up to her current status and more about the state of the society and government. Without giving too much away, do yourself a favour and push through if you find it slow to start. Very thought-provoking.
