This? This is what fantasy should be like, people. Rooted in history (a Welsh Merlin! why did no one else write this? or did they? in which case, where, please?), with vivid writing (including a cold gaze on the realities of post-Roman Britain), a fresh take on a legend (Merlin's childhood), characters who are almost but not quite archetypes (everyone but everyone, Niniane, Aurelius, Cadal)...this is amazing; up there with Lloyd Alexander, J.R.R. Tolkien, and other luminaries of world-building.
