I tried to give this one three stars but in the end couldn't. If I really felt it was a three star book, I wouldn't be planning to read the rest of the series. My hesitation at giving it four stars is only because it started sooo slooowwllly. It took me forever to get into it. But once I got into it (after about 200 pages), I was hooked.

I admire Martin for his willingness to kill off characters if it will help the story. Nobody is safe. Don't think that just because it's a primary character, they're going to be with you through the whole story.

I also like how well Martin fleshes out all of the characters. Even the seemingly minor characters have a back-story that you get to glimpse to know why they might be making some of the choices they make. Also, he does it in an organic way. It never feels like exposition.

I have not been able to get into the second book in the series, so I guess this one really wasn't good enough to interest me completely. Therefore I have removed a star.
