The book reads like a prologue / setup for the series, which is a little disappointing. Very little actually happens. That said, the setup is great. I think the series will be fantastic. It takes me a bit to actually get into the rhythm of Scalzi sci-fi. Not to sound like a total dweeb, but all the cursing bugs me and the overly familiar way the "Emperox of the known universe" works seems weird. I'm a bit of a hard scifi / Dune style nerd, so I want my Emperoxes to be grander. I have to consciously put that attitude aside in order to enjoy Scalzi. Once I get over that hump, I'm ok. Solid start to what I believe will be a great series.
