it was amazing

After completing the Shadow & Bone trilogy I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book set in the Grisha world, but featuring a whole new cast of characters. Bardugo manages to master believable world-building with a high-stakes storyline while creating characters that each have their own rich inner lives -- and secrets. In this book, she alternates the narration between the main characters who are part of a bold heist. I loved getting to know these characters while also following them - breathlessly - through an adventure that offered obstacles at every turn. Bardugo does a wonderful job of drilling into big issues of bias, power and oppression by showing the reader the impact of those issues on individual characters. The ending set up even more stakes and I can't wait to find out how the next installment will play out as these characters risk losing more of their humanity in order to reach the goals they've set.
