it was amazing
bookshelves: poetry, ya

Written in poetic verse, Thompson tells the story of a NY 8th grader whose classmate commits suicide. Her parents decide to send her to Japan to spend the summer with her mother's family. This story takes on bullying--it felt influenced by the Phoebe Prince tragedy--and how things can spiral out of control. What happens to those left behind and how do you move on? It also brings in the idea of family, as Kana slowly unfolds the Japanese piece of her she never knew. Sad and beautifully written. A great book for YAs to start a discussion on bullying.

Tracy almost done with this...I can't put it down. I got it from the library this morning. Great for middle and high school students.
