You can't build a theology of the Incarnation without first looking at the New Testament, and early Church documents to understand what they were fighting at the time and why we have formulated the doctrine in such a way today. It definitely was a helpful read, and at times very mystical, and yet at the same time clear for readers to understand. I appreciate Athansius' view of Christ, and helping readers to understand early Christology. The one thing we need to remember is that some of what he said applies directly to his time period, and so some of the ideas/issues may not make sense to us, but were very pertinent to his explaining how the Incarnation is necessary.

At the same time that I enjoyed this, and it did help to draw closer to understanding the dual natures of Christ as fully God and yet in His Incarnation limiting himself in his humanity, it helped to draw me closer to the person of Christ and understand how the early church understood Christ. We cannot grapple with theology today unless we have first looked at or understood the theology of the past. Though there were definitely some points that made me cringe, and people would look at and say, "See...this is why I don't believe because of the hatred that came through at times." I still think it is a valuable devotional book, to lead us in our journey to Christ.
