it was amazing
bookshelves: classic

You've got to love Austen, she never disappoints. This was a thickly annotated 2007 release (by David M. Shapard) from which I learned that Bingley's fortune of 5,000 pounds would be 250-300K today. Darcy by contrast would have been one of the ten richest men in England. And there was talk among the neighbors that Lydia might have gone "about the town" which apparently is a reference to prostitution. But the most fun part of getting back to the original is that Eliza Bennet is actually more whimsical than as played by Jennifer Ehle in the 1995 BBC version. Austen's Eliza still has that exuberance of youth. And we get to know more of Darcy's state of mind. Still such a pleasure.
