it was ok
bookshelves: ya-lit, ya-lit-supernatural

Lauren Kate's Fallen emanates a dark, Southern Gothic quality, but the highly stylized nature of the work is not enough to save this book from ultimately falling flat. I felt that the characters were more like caricatures or stock characters as opposed to real people. For instance, you have stand-offish dream guy, the crazy chick, the preppy bubblegum blond, and the fat loyal friend. The main character, Luce is supposedly just a normal girl who doesn't even care about her looks, yet all the guys fight over regardless (cough yeah right). I would have preferred more emotional intensity and depth, but the heavy peppering of action scenes in almost every chapter will appeal to reluctant readers.
