really liked it
bookshelves: classics

The characters were their own people. O-lan is SO beautiful, even though she is plain. I really respected Wang Lung until the summer of the flood and the tea house. It was very difficult for me to appreciate him as a person after that summer. A theme of the book is how problems change with economic advancement; is it better to be hungry or idle? It reinforces the recent snippet I saw -- people generally believe that they will be happy if they make $10,000 more a year and they rarely are happier when they make that much more...people don't believe that they will be significantly happier if they take a half hour walk every day and walking regularly does increase happiness.

Steph Fisher i loved this book, too. it made me sad to see how they went from poor and relatively happy, to rich and miserable.
