Grady Tripp has problems. He is a college english professor, struggling to finish his 4th book that he has been working on for years and has written 6 different endings to. His book is over 1,000 pages. His wife has left him, his mistress is pregnant, his editor and long time friend Crabtree is a walking pharmacy who has picked up a transvestite on the way to the annual writer's Wordfest hosted by the college. A student of Tripp's has stolen the coat Marilyn Monroe wore when she married Joe DeMaggio from the college Chancellor's house and Grady has a bad ankle where Doctor Dee the Chancellor's dog bit him. And that doesn't include the family gathering for Passover, the snake, the Hi Hat and the Ford Galaxy.

But when the going gets tough, Grady Tripp just rolls a nice fattie, takes a big toke and proceeds to let life unfold. This book is laugh out loud funny, chaotic and a bit too long. But it holds together and it's a real talented feat to keep the laughs coming and the story so vibrant.

This is the 2nd book I've read by Michael Chabon, the man is brilliant, love his style, intelligence and wit. The Yiddish Policeman's Union is even better than this and this is pretty good. I really had the munchies after reading Wonder Boys though.
