it was amazing
bookshelves: fantasy
Read from March 27 to April 28, 2017 , read count: 1

I decided I wanted to read this after reading "The Girl in the Mirror" in the Dangerous Women anthology. I just really liked Grossman's style.

The NYT review said, "if Harry Potter was catnip for a certain type of kid, this is crack for a certain type of adult." Pretty much. Quentin's entire school career whizzes by by the halfway mark, with less danger but a lot more sex, drinking, and dorm drama. This isn't magical grade and high school, it's magical college. I smirked at the few lampshade tips to Harry Potter. But this isn't just "Harry Potter for adults."

There does end up being an antagonist, but the biggest enemy the kids face is: what do you do when you can do anything you want? What happens when you get your life's dream? Quentin's privileged-boy ennui will probably irritate some, but you don't have to put up with any charmed chosen one baggage either.

Apparently I'm that certain kind of adult, because I'm going to go out and pick up the next one, maybe two.
