it was amazing

** spoiler alert ** Starr Carter is blessed with a loving, supportive family. Her parents have also enrolled her in a good, suburban private school where she can feel safe. But she lives in a poor, urban black neighborhood victimized by gangs, and has friends who suffer from dysfunctional families and local violence. Living in two worlds, Starr feels like two different people, and is always on guard as to how to behave to keep her world's in balance. When Kahlil, one of her best friends, is killed by the police while driving her home from a party, her grief and anger make it very difficult to hold things together. Eventually, she must come to terms with whether to speak out on behalf of her friend. Starr's story and authentic voice won me over, and the other characters are also well-drawn. This is a 5 star plus must read, exploring serious issues of race, police violence, and gang violence.

This is the third book I listened to narrated by Bahni Turpin. I loved listening to her.
