bookshelves: civil-war

This is a superb single volume history of the Civil War period. It is not just a battle history - McPherson also explores the social, cultural, political, diplomatic, economic, biographical and historical threads - beginning with the Mexican War and through to the end of the War in 1865 - weaving them all into a compelling narrative of the time as a whole. It is a remarkable work - discursive, eminently readable, perceptive and satisfying. Remarkable - there could be no finer or more comprehensive text regarding the Civil War - couple this with Shelby Foote's three volume battle history and you have the ultimate Civil War history and resource.
