I got this book because I am a huge fan of Johnny Depp bu the movie was too violent. I was sadly disappointed when I discovered that the characters were really different than the movie. Johanna was not Sweeney's daughter, and I could not find a connection with any of the characters. Tobias was hardly in the story, Johanna was not trapped at all- her husband was killed by Sweeney and she spent the whole story weeping. Mrs. Lovett was the only person I was actually curious about, but she was disturbing and did not show her face much. And lastly, (to my dismay) Sweeney Todd himself was not a troubled soul. He was just a cruel man who killed for money purposes- not for love or revenge. I found myself hating the character each page I read!

So, if you are wanting to buy the book on the basis that it will be similar or identical to the movie, you will be wasting your money.
