Sections read like a litany of historical facts but for the most part this does a remarkable job of describing the history of the Netherlands in about 500 pages. I read it in Dutch which was fine, I'm pretty sure the English will be better since that is the author's native tongue. I particularly enjoyed the section on the early modern era and the renaissance. If you are interested in that time period in world history, or if you're curious about how the hell such a tiny country for a while managed to be so economically and culturally dominant, you should read this.
