An Open Book: Coming of Age in the Heartland
Michael Dirda for many years was a staff reviewer for the Washington Post. This is his account of his childhood and early youth growing up in Northern Ohio. His father worked in the steel mills. His mother was at home with the kids. But it is more than just a memoir. It is also an intellectual biography demonstrating the irreplaceable influence of books in his development. He won a scholarship to Oberlin and his descriptions of his experiences at that remarkable college are wonderful. As a retired librarian, I was delighted by this marvelous book.
