really liked it
bookshelves: fiction

Very much alike to the series with Alanna the Knight, First Test seems like a promising start to the Protector of the Small series. Kel is not quite the strong character Alanna was, not to say she doesn't try. Overall she appears to be a bit weaker and lacking the drive that her inspiration has.
Pierce's writing is engaging and quick, leading the reader through Kel's entire first year in the span of this short novel. Not much of Tortall, in history or geography is covered as much of the book remains inside the training grounds and dormitories. A wider perspective of the court might be nice, or of Corus I recall Alanna got to explore the city a bit in her days.
Overall, a good quick read for young girls (and boys too) and for those who haven't read other Pierce books, a nice introduction to the ways of Tortall.
