Niall Ferguson is one of the most engaging and one of my favourite historians of our times (I highly recommend his other books - 'the war of the world' and 'the Empire' - superlative). He does succeed in making finance/ money an interesting topic for the uninitiated as well as the professionals. The book is written in a novel form with juicy tales of the first families of banking - the Medici, the Rothchilds through to savings and loans crisis to the current crisis (with a gallant attempt to make CDOs and CDO squares understandable to general reader!). Whilst saying it is a comprehensive' financial history of the world' may not be a credible claim, it certainly is well worth a read. I marvel at the ability of a historian to delve deep in the esoteric world of finance and come out sounding like an 'insider' - a banker but an interesting one (now that's a rare breed) !
