it a wonderful observation and commentary on the chnaging face of britian betwen the zenith of the empire and the ruin of the second world war, he grasps the impact of the war and rapid urbanisation that comes with modern society. i particurlarly liked how he twists all these changes in a simple story of a man in his mid life crisis. the human tale is not compromised to the political message in say 1984. I grew to really liked and empthasie with geroge bowling, he reminded me of the cafe owner in'ello 'e llo! its not so absorbing in the begining but by the end he has you gripped in to the story. his views on religion, intelligentsia and stuff come out witht eh scathing attack on the classical scholar.cant wait to read 1984!
