I was intrigued to read this since Mayfield lived among Somali Bantu in Portland. We have a Somali Bantu community here in Columbus, and years ago my family and I spent some time with a Bantu family. So, I was curious to read about her experience. I could relate some of the things she talked about, the Somali Bantu names she mentioned held faces I knew here. Overall, I felt (along with her) such a sense of frustration and disappointment in her inability to make any kind of impact in their lives. It felt like a hopeless story that has no end. Such may be the case when missionaries are long suffering to see a changed life. In the end, she does find peace, but not in any changed Bantu lives. She sees it in discovering the God who loves her as much as He loves the forgotten of this world.
