I have noticed that Robin McKinley is a hit and miss writer. I have really loved some of her books, and others haven't been that great. This book was a hit and miss book. It's a compilation of 4 short fairytales, 2 based on classic fairytales and 2 original. The idea was fun, but the stories were weak. They felt too rushed and too easily cleared up. Most of them were quite top-heavy, too. They started out with a good, intriguing beginning, with lots of detail, but ended up feeling rushed and not fully satisfying. I think she tried to fit too much into such short stories and ended up shortchanging the end. Most of the characters were quite flat, too. Of all the stories, I think the Door in the Hedge was the weakest, and the Twelve Dancing Princesses was the strongest. This book is still a fun read if you don't expect it to be anything amazing.
