Andersen uses the Mayan 2012 end of the world prophecy of the backbone of this story. She does skillfully weave the actual facts of the existing prophecy and her story together. However there are times when the book seriously slows down. This is partly due to the fact that she introduces a lot of characters to you. While I do understand why she did that, it's obvious that she is setting up stories for furture books in the series this also takes focus away from the hero and heroin, Strike and Leah, quite often. I didn't feel any connection between the two. They went from meeting, to falling in love. But no real filler in between. It read more like a Sci-Fi/Fantasy more than a true Romance novel. But despite this I will read the other books in the series (so far only Dawnkeeps is out) if only to see where the story is headed. Hopefully it will get tighter as it goes along.
