An atmospheric novel that really evokes the Newfoundland landscape in which it is set. Quoyle is a rather boring protagonist at first, not very good at his job, not very good at his marriage which his wife takes full advantage of to have affair after affair. Her death, which occurs very early on in the novel, is the catalyst he needed to get him to really take control of his life. He uproots his daughters and moves them all to Newfoundland to live with 'the aunt'. It is here that then novel really takes off, as does the weather, and Quoyle finds himself becoming a part of the fabric of this towns life in a way that he never has been before. This is a spectacular novel about accepting yourself and finding happiness in doing so.
