Following on from the closing stages and the Epliogue of The Magicians Guild, The Novice heavily concentrates on Sonea's new life as a Novice in the Guild - her lessons, her guardianship, first love and coping with the bullying from her contemporaries due to her heritige, especially Regin who you can't help but think is really Draco Mallfoy. This is lightly interspersed with the backgrounds of the other main characters introduced in The Magicians Guild as well as the investigations regarding unsolved murders in the city and their possible connections with the High Lord's past - however, not as much as I would have liked. All this coming together by the end of book makes you wonder is the High Lord what he seems to be, or is there something greater that the Guild should be afraid of?

This is a far better read than the author's debut and it shows. Even with the book being aimed at a young adult audience, it is not as glaringly obvious as it was in The Magicians Guild, as the author writes with a more balanced style of prose making it accessible for young and old reading levels - coping well with sensitive topics that were only hinted at in the Magician's Guild.
